Nurturely produced the documentary Cultures of Birth
exploring Mayan mothers’ experiences during pregnancy,
birth, and postpartum in Guatemala and the US. The first
goal of the documentary is to support healthcare and
social service providers in being more culturally humble
and providing more compassionate care to
Guatemalan parents. The second goal of the
documentary is to raise overall awareness of the
cultural uniqueness and cultural connectedness
of birth, locally and globally.

What did you learn?
Understanding the approach to cultural
childbirth, community support, and
allowances for rest and recuperation. I also
hadn't known about the need for warm food
and drink as opposed to cold - this is simple
yet profound for an experiential need.
